God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity
18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
*Commentary* This entire passage is a declaration that revokes all excuses of the deniers of God. Paul gives a stern address that expresses the anger and wrath of God to those who do not believe. He removes all their excuses by declaring that they do not believe, because they refuse to believe. They can’t just claim there is no proof. In fact, verse 20 addresses their claims of having no proof. It states, his invisible qualities, his eternal power, and his divine nature, are clearly seen. All they must do is look around.
Let’s break this down even more. What does verse 20 mean by “invisible qualities, eternal power and divine nature?” How can we see them if they’re invisible? The answer is, it’s the power that is needed to provide for us. Not the actual food, air, water, or earth we live on. But the power that had to create it all and the unlimited power it takes to sustain it all. That power and divine nature are the invisible qualities that Paul is describing. All this power creates something that is “clearly seen.” And the end of verse 20 sums it up, “all they have to do is look around.”
