The Pentecost
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
*Commentary* In 1:5 Jesus tells his disciples that they will be “Baptized in the Holy Spirit.” In acts 2, we see what is meant by that. It’s the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit.” It’s the beginning of a mission, for those in the upper room. It’s a blessing bestowed upon them, that gives them the special power to begin Christianity, as we know it. It’s at this point, that all believers in God will be given the blessing of the spirit. It will guide us through our walk with God.
- How is this “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” different than the filling of the holy spirit that can come upon Christians?
- What did they see and hear, as the Spirit entered?
